Small Enclosed Town Garden (Rear)

Before (laid to lawn) and After (terraces, pathways and borders) The Brief:
We were asked to transform a small square garden on a sloping site to the rear of a modern three storey town house. Overlooked on all sides, this space needed a strong design in order to hold its own against the surrounding buildings. The clients, a professional couple, wanted something a little different, but with a traditional feel, in which to entertain. They also requested low maintenance planting.
The Solution:
The garden already benefited from a feature wall giving a courtyard feel to the space. The introduction of brick retaining walls to form terraces enables a more practical use of the whole area. The lines delineating areas of patio and lawn are sharp and straight, achieving a positive balance between landscape and architecture. The blocks of patio and lawn are the same size whilst the border sizes vary, drawing the eye away from the boundaries and into the garden. The planting follows a restricted to a palette of white, purple and green to giving the garden a calm and soft ambiance. Small trees give additional height and screening.

Case Study 2:
Restructing a garden following the addition of a new conservatory

Before: The conservatory appears 'buried' in the lawn; the area to the left is very dark

After: Indian sandstone patio with circle feature; Japanese style gravel garden and semi circular water feature that provides additional seating
The Brief:
Our clients had an established garden that was in need of updating and restructuring following the construction of a new conservatory. The existing patio was too small and a bank of soil need to be moved away from front of the conservatory doors and retained. There was also a ‘problem area’ to the left of the conservatory. This corner was totally dominated by a large conifer that provided valuable screening but made the whole area dark and unusable.
The Solution:
The patio area has been expanded by the conservatory/patio doors to create space for entertaining to open up the view of the garden from the conservatory. A water feature set into a rendered retaining wall provides a focal point as well as built-in seating.
We have transformed the area to the left of the conservatory into a Japanese gravel garden. The large conifer to the left of the conservatory has been replaced by a row of mature bamboos that provide screening without blocking out the light. Over sized bamboo poles (uplit at night) and a slate monolith water feature further transform this corner into a ‘garden room’ that dramatically improves the view from inside the conservatory.
